Daily Reading:
Romans 6-8
Do to personal choice, I will be taking a break from my current reading plan and focusing on Romans 6-8 this week.
1.) Lessons:
- 6:6-7 - For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin, because anyone who has died has been freed form sin.
- 6:11-12 - In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.
- 6:20-21 - When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of?
- 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 7:5-6 - For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
- 7:11 - For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.
- 7:15-25 - I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 21 So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature[d] a slave to the law of sin.
- 8:5-8 - Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.
- 8:13 - For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.
- 8:18 - I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.
2.) Applications:
- I am free from sin and do not have to be enslaved to sin anymore.
- I must not let sin reign in my mortal body or give into its thoughts or desires.
- The wages of sin is death, but God has given me the gift of eternal life through His Son.
- Do not live as I formerly did. Choose to live a life of righteousness but putting away the sin that hinders and entangles me.
- What a wretched man I am! I do not do what I want to do and I end up doing what I despise. I know that nothing good lives in me and that my sin nature is in constant battle with my desire to obey God's law.
- I am a slave to the law of sin but through Christ Jesus I am offered the gift of repentance and forgiveness.
- I must live according to the Law of the Spirit and not the sinful nature of my mind for if I continue living according to the sinful nature of my mind I will die. For is is through the Spirit that I can put to death the misdeeds of the body and live according the Spirit.
